Lee’s Summit Newborn Photographer | Introducing Lane

Lee’s Summit Newborn Photographer | Introducing Lane

You guys, Lane is the kind of baby who spoils me.  Like makes me forget how complicated this job can be sometimes. You know because babies are tricky and unpredictable.

People who have never been to a newborn session often say to me, “Oh you must love working with newborns.  I bet those sessions are the easiest, since babies sleep all the time”.  To those people I want to say, “Are you out of your mind? Have you ever met a newborn baby?” And to those of you who know me by “want to say” means “I say”.

I mean, really, have you tried to undress a baby and not waken it? Have you ever then sat in a hot room for a couple of hours just to keep them comfortable after removing said clothes? (And this girl sweats.  Like a dude).  And then after you have managed to begin the session with baby asleep have you ever tried to mold a newborn into the peaceful poses you see?

Here’s the simplest of tasks, next time you meet a newborn baby, just a week old or so, do this for me…unclench their fist.  But gently and don’t irritate them.  Okay have you done it?  Now make those fingers stay straight.  Like not one little curl or twitch.  So easy. Okay great. Now you need to do that for two-three hours straight.  With everything.  Don’t forget any detail.  The fingers, the toes, the knees, the chin.  Align them in a way that photographs well and is comfortable for your little model. No crying from the babe is the goal.

What if they do cry? Well, it is your job to comfort them back to their sleepy happy place.  Easy, right? So again, I have to ask, have you ever met a newborn baby?

Every baby is different and not every soothing technique works for every baby.  So yeah, patting the tush doesn’t solve all your problems.

If you were easily discouraged, all the details would be enough to make you want to quit.  However, I am not one of those people.

Look, I LOVE this job.  LOVE it.  And when I have a challenging session, but still manage to get beautiful images I feel accomplished.  Proud of myself and happy for the parents.  I want to please them and make a perfect memory. In that situation my goal would be to make them forget a difficult session when they see the final product. If I can do that I feel good.

I have to admit though I am so thrilled when I get a sleepy little snuggle bug like Lane.  The baby who sleeps through everything.  Who disproves everything I just said.  Who tricks you into thinking this job is easy! I love those sessions.  They are rewarding in a different way.  They allow me the opportunity to really take the time to enjoy what I am doing.  To not feel as much pressure and worry if I will get enough great shots.  Those sessions allow me to fall in love with my little client.  And to truly be in love with what I do is a great thing.

Thank you Lane for reminding me of that today.
