KC Newborn Photography | Nora
Meet Nora. She was such a good baby and her big sister Harper was so perfect and excited for photos too. She was just past that age of wanting nothing to do with session so she was totally down to pose perfectly with her little sis.
Nora slept great through the family portion of our session, but had about 45 min of wakefulness. Personally, I don’t mind shooting an awake baby if they are calm and content. This won’t work if your baby is hungry of course, but often times after a feeding they need just a bit to fall back asleep. I never want to waste time and always take advantage of these sweet expressions. I think if your photographer is patient, experienced and knows what they are doing then you can capture beautiful awake photos of your little one. When an inexperienced photographer (don’t get offended, I was once that person too) tries to do the same, you will often end up with less than desirable captures. It takes practice and I will often toss more of these than I end up keeping.
I like to work on the floor when my babies are awake. It feels safer and it allows me more mobility and the ability to grab angles that will best represent their sweet features. I want full eye contact, when possible. And I don’t want to shoot up their nose or to have limbs stretched in front of their face. I always try to get them to appear as relaxed as possible and it sometimes takes great patience. I can honestly say, my clients almost always love these images.
My sessions last for 2-3.5 hours so generally if a little one is content, with no tummy or feeding issues, a little awake time is great. They usually fall back asleep at some point allowing me the opportunity to get those perfect poses everyone loves.
I provide my clients with prep and as long as they follow it and we keep the baby fed, I would say we can generally make any newborn personality work. Each session is unique because every baby is different. However, my goal is always to capture quality images that both of us can be proud to share.
Thank you for trusting me with your girls Chuck and Katie. They are beyond precious and it was a such a pleasure working with all of you.
