I had been waiting to meet Ava since the beginning of December, but due to medical issues she remained in the NICU until just this week. I normally photograph my babies within the first two weeks so this was way out of my norm. Totally out of my comfort zone. See, Ava was born on her due date so there was no adjusted age. This baby was almost a 6 week old She was falling more into the infant category than what I would call a newborn. So because of this I was a little worried.
I was worried she wouldn’t sleep. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to pose her the way I wanted her to. I was worried the session wouldn’t be what I wanted it to be.
Then I met Ava.
Ava was a tiny little thing, still under 7 pounds (at least a pound of it hair, I’m almost certain). She had already had two surgeries (more than I have ever had and I am 36). Ava really has been through a lot. She has to work hard just to get through her day ( I am sure the session wore her out). Suddenly, I wasn’t so worried that everything wasn’t going to go my way.
I couldn’t hit every pose like I am used to. I couldn’t calm her the way I would have liked. I couldn’t have my way.
And that was okay.
Today we did something that I often forget to do. Today we went for simple. Today we went for uncomplicated.
And I found I wasn’t disappointed. I was happy. Every image I captured was something to be excited about. Every shot was a keeper.
