Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year in Kansas City. The leaves turn golden, the air cools down, and it’s the perfect backdrop for cozy family portraits. But if you’re a parent, you might be wondering: “How do I get my kids ready for a family photography session without stress or meltdowns?”
As a Kansas City family photographer with over 16 years of experience, I’ve worked with children of all ages—including active boys around 6 and 9 years old like the ones in this session. Today I’m sharing my top tips on how to prepare kids for fall family photos so that your session feels fun, relaxed, and stress-free.
1. Choose Comfortable, Coordinated Outfits
Fall family photos look best in warm tones—think deep reds, mustard yellows, navy, and neutrals. But the most important thing is comfort. If kids feel itchy, tight, or restricted, it will show in their expressions. For boys, try layered looks like a soft sweater over a button-down or jeans with a henley. The goal is a polished, coordinated look without feeling “too dressed up.”
After the heat of summer, fall brings crisp, cool air that makes outdoor sessions so much more enjoyable. Kids are less likely to get overheated, parents feel more comfortable, and the whole family can relax and have fun together.

3. Keep Expectations Realistic (and Fun!)
Instead of aiming for “perfectly posed,” focus on capturing genuine moments. I’ll guide your kids with fun prompts—walking together, playing in the leaves, or sharing a silly joke. These little interactions often create the most natural smiles and authentic Kansas City family portraits with children.

4.Prep Them With Excitement, Not Pressure
Talk to your kids about the session in a positive way: “We’re going to play outside and take some fun pictures!” Avoid putting pressure on them to “behave” or “smile just right.” When kids feel like it’s an adventure instead of a chore, they relax and enjoy themselves.

5.Trust Your Photographer
After 16 years photographing Kansas City families, I’ve learned how to connect with kids quickly and keep the session moving at their pace. My goal is always to capture timeless images that reflect your family’s personality—not just stiff, posed portraits.
