I had the tiniest little lady in my studio this week. She was petite, yes, but at just under three weeks old she was already developing her own opinion about everything. And I have to admit that I was a little nervous when her parents said, “She is the gassiest baby ever.” Not exactly what the photographer who is hired to capture images of their serene sleeping newborn wants to hear. While she did do a bit of complaining( and a whole lot of pooping) we managed to get every shot we were after. All the gassiest girl ever needed was some professional shushing and a few gas drops. At least for this session, I am sure in the middle of the night with no sleep is an entirely different story. Please do not call me at three o’clock in the morning…I will be completely useless!

I know I said Evelyn was tiny here in these images, but she was born at just over 5lbs. Mom and Dad showed me cellphone pics of her right after delivery and she wasn’t the chubby newborn you might imagine yourself bringing home. I know this first hand because I also had a “skinny” baby. My oldest was born at 4lbs 14oz and we brought her home weighing in at 4lbs 4oz. I really don’t think I was qualified to be handling a human of that size, but the hospital gave her to me anyway. And my skinny baby was LOUD. And she was loud a lot. If my husband called to check on us he would ask things like, “How are you, is Millie screaming today?” I think it is a skinny baby thing. They just have big attitudes.

Eventually my skinny baby got chubby cheeks and rolly arms and chubby thighs. And you can see Miss Evelyn has a head start on the cheeks. They are definitely already squeezable. So this girl is headed in the right direction. Next time I see her she will be all squishy baby goodness. Hopefully with that same beautiful smile and just as much spunk.

Her momma said, “She may be little but she is fierce”. Yep, I think that suits her just perfectly.
