When it comes to newborn photography, the difference between lifestyle and posed photography is all about the level of direction, environment, and overall feeling of the images.
Lifestyle Newborn Photography
- Focuses on natural, unposed moments in the baby’s real environment. This is usually at home, however some studios are set up to shoot lifestyle sessions there. Generally you will see the basic bed by a window set up.
- Captures authentic interactions between the baby and family—snuggling, feeding, or looking/smiling at each other.
- The photographer may give prompts, but the session avoids heavy posing.
- Often uses natural light and the baby’s nursery, parents’ bed, or living room as the backdrop. Or, as I mentioned before, a bed set up in a studio.
- Example: A mother cuddling her newborn in a rocking chair, siblings gently touching the baby’s head. Or in a studio session, a family piled on a bed, snuggling or laughing together while looking at the new baby.
Posed Newborn Photography
- The baby is carefully positioned into artistic, curled-up poses. Most photographers will also include family and sibling poses during their session.
- Typically shot in a studio with controlled lighting, props, and backdrops.
- Uses blankets, baskets, wraps, and headbands/hats to create a styled look. Most often, a majority of these photos will be baby-focused, as opposed to family-focused.
- Requires skill in safe baby posing, as newborns need gentle handling.
- Example: A baby swaddled in a soft wrap, posed in a basket with a headband. Or more advanced poses with baby on tummy with head on its hands. Your photographer will be well educated and skilled with transistioning babies between poses while they are sleeping and keeping them comfortable.
