It was such a pleasure to meet this sweet birthday girl for her Blue Springs cake smash photos. Not only was she a total doll but she was happy as can be and had THE most expressive face. She loved her cake and was very serious about the task at hand. You could tell she was planning to finish the entire thing herself.
That day. Right there in the studio. Spoiler alert, we did not let her. But I’m telling you she was very determined.

It seems that the word determined likely best describes Harper. And I mean from the very beginning of her life. She was determined to arrive on her own timeline. As you can see below she came into this world just a tiny little thing. Much too early. Much too small. Her parents weren’t quite ready for her arrival, but Harper was choosing her birthday. No one else was going to have a say in that. She spent time in the NICU. Not the ideal way to begin your baby’s life BUT Harper was determined to meet milestones and find her way home with her parents.

And here she is a year later, completely unrecognizable from her newborn photo. Sitting up so big and strong, she’s got rolls and cheeks for days! I am so honored to have the opportunity to capture just one of Harper’s many milestones. Happy birthday baby girl!

Cake Smash Photos Kansas City | Boho Baby

It was beyond fun to photograph this adorable birthday girl. Everyone, meet Reese! She was all smiles, super happy, and friendly. My ideal cake smash baby.

I really couldn’t have hoped for a better session.

It is most important, in my opinion, for a baby to have had a good nap and to arrive at the studio well-rested. Like that is for sure number one. If that hasn’t happened then you failed to plan. I used to be a stickler about a morning smash. But this is when I would stack sessions on a few days a week. Covid forced me to see one client a day for over a year, so I could properly disinfect and keep space between clients. In doing that I began asking clients when they would like to shoot.

Any hour start time because I was free from the grind of squeezing in as many sessions a day as possible.

And you know what happened? First of all, I was a much happier and less stressed photographer. No more rushing and running the entire day trying to get clients in and out the door. Now I am able to take time setting up, shooting, chatting with parents, and then cleaning up at a more manageable pace.

And with keeping nap time in mind my babies are generally (knock on wood) happy and successful smashers. I mean, I am very experienced at smashes and I have a real routine and pace for how I like to shoot them. For me, I like to get babies excited, having fun and I really don’t want to let that pace slow down. We are only together for a short amount of time and I don’t give them the chance to get bored or decide they are done with our session. We go, go, go and keep things hyped. It is very high energy and can feel like a lot to the grown-ups in the room, but I promise when you get this kind of shot it is totally worth it!

KC Cake Smash Photography | Wild One

Annabelle, or Annie, is one of five sisters. She is the daughter of one of my long-time clients. Like so long ago clients that I photographed her oldest sister in my tiny home studio.

The commute was great, but the space was limited and I definitely had imposter syndrome. Without a commercial space, I just didn’t feel as professional as I wanted to be. Yet, my clients kept coming back and trusting me with their most precious memories. I am so grateful for those who hung in there with me through the years of parking in my driveway and my cat peeking in through the french doors to my shooting space. It really was humbling starting out in your home. I really think it makes me appreciate the space I have now and how far I have come. It also makes me so thankful for those clients who came along with me over the last 13 years. Omg. I really can’t believe it’s been that long.

Right now I am writing this, sitting at a desk in the space I used to shoot my sessions in. The hardwood is carpeted over, the walls are no longer white but instead navy blue. There’s a cat hanging out in the corner. She’s allowed in the room now. And I can sit here and reflect on how far I’ve come and be proud. But most of all very, very grateful.

KC Cake Smash Photos | Lunar New Year

Rokelin is one and he is fast! Like so fast I can’t believe we got any shots of him in his portrait outfit.

I ask every parent when they come in for their session, “Can your baby walk yet?” And most of the time parents answer in a somewhat disappointed tone, “No.” As if they are letting me down or something. Let me clear this up right now, I am absolutely not disappointed if your baby cannot walk on the day of his cake smash. In fact, I am overjoyed. The happiest I could be. My two wishes, your baby takes a good nap the day of the session and he doesn’t learn to walk until the day after we shoot. So no more sad faces, okay guys. I love it.

So Rokelin, can’t walk. Great. Makes my job easier. Makes mom’s job easier as a baby wrangler. Unless you are Rokelin’s mom. Because if you are, let me tell you, you are going to be in a full-on sweat after you have to try to keep this baby in place. This kid can crawl. And not just like a regular crawl. Like lightning speed crawl. And the best part, he thought it was hilarious to try and getaway. Oh yeah, Ro, it was funny alright. Lol. But you are cute so I forgive you.

Luckily, when it was time for the cake he was so into it that he did not try to run. He instead was a perfect model baby. He sat, he smashed, he smiled, he laughed and he gave me all the eye contact with the winky smiles. And I loved him for it.

Our theme as Lunar New Year. I have never done this theme before and it was fun to try something different. I actually ended up loving it. I don’t know why, but I am kind of obsessed with those marbled planet balloons. I mean it isn’t rocket science. One round balloon with a skinny balloon wrapped around it, but it’s cool. Right?

If your baby is rounding their first year it’s time to start thinking about booking a cake smash session. Cake smash sessions are so fun! A one year session captures all those last baby features. Soon your sweet baby will turn into a crazy little toddler.

A Cake Smash session with Shawnee Mission Hills Cake Smash Photographer Anna Marie Photography is not just smashing a cake! You’ll get a portrait setup too. Pick your favorite little outfit and a backdrop to coordinate. We have hundreds of backdrops to choose from! Once the portrait setup is done we’ll move over to the smash setup.

You’ll choose your smash theme or colors and then let us do the rest. We will pull together all the cute little props, balloons and backdrop. We’ll have a matching cake from Simply Sweet Cakes and Cupcakes. The cake not only looks amazing, it tastes that way too! You’ll leave the session that day with whatever baby didn’t devour.

After you’ve shot your session you’ll view your online gallery and choose your favorite images. You can choose individual images or upgrade to the entire gallery. You’ll also have the opportunity to order printed products to show off that little one.

We usually recommend booking your cake smash 4-6 weeks in advance. This allows us time to get on our bakers schedule and pull all the props together for your set. We like to have all the little touches in your smash setup. This means that we need time to be creative and purchase items if need be. In addition, we prefer to have babies in the studio before they can walk. If your little one is an early walker, no worries. It just helps with the shooting process if baby isn’t running from us and you!
